Episode #29: Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Welcome everyone to the Reel Film Nerds podcast!  Today’s review is a special one for both your hosts, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?  Matt and Mike grew up glued to their television sets watching Mister Rogers and his many lessons.  They have been talking about wanting to see this biopic since it came out back in January 2018 and now they have a chance.  As difficult as it was Mike was able to tie Won’t You Be My Neighbor? to the Marvel Cinematic Universe you will have to listen to find out how.

Mike and Matt both loved this film without question.  Matt has a hard time understanding why it is life changing and extremely popular right now.  It is a very good film about an amazing man who touched the lives of millions.  Mike learned a lot about Mister Rogers and some of the controversies surrounding him that neither of the hosts knew about.  Matt really tried as hard as he could not to find a problem with this film, but he did anyways.  He really wishes they would have discussed Fred Rogers’ home life more then they did.  At the end of the show he tries to explain the Navy SEALS rumor and does a terrible job at it probably offending lots of people.  Only time will tell.

I guess it is not a rare occasion anymore since this is now 2 pods in a row but your hosts agreed on the rating.  Mike and Matt both give Won’t You Be My Neighbor? 4 out of 5 Reels.  It is an incredible biography that is a must watch, you just don’t have to see it in the theater.  Won’t You Be My Neighbor? will probably be on PBS or Netflix by the end of the year try to catch it then.

We apologize for some of the audio issues in this episode.  Matt tried to clean up Mike’s audio the best he could but there is still a lot of background noise.  Thank you for subscribing and listening to our podcast!  We will talk at you next Tuesday with our review of The First Purge.

Episode #28: Ant-Man and the Wasp

Welcome everyone to a new episode of the Reel Film Nerds that you aren’t going to listen to!  Today your hosts are talking about the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film Ant-Man and the Wasp!  Mike and Matt don’t really get off topic much on this review.  Is this the start of them becoming serious reviewers?  Doubtful!  No MCU tie-in for this episode either since Ant-Man and the Wasp is in the MCU!

Matt and Mike both really enjoyed Ant-Man and Wasp.  Matt like always has a few nitpicky things he talks about but for the most part really enjoyed it especially the comedic aspects.  Mike really liked the film as well but did not think it did anything above and beyond your typical MCU flick.  They both enjoyed the original Ant-Man more than this sequel.  Guess what we have one of those rare occasions where your hosts actually agreed on a rating!  Mike and Matt both give Ant-Man and the Wasp 3.5 out of 5 Reels.  It is a fun hilarious family action film that is worth a watch in the theaters.  Thank you for subscribing and listening to our podcast!  We will talk at you Thursday with our review of Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Episode #27: Legacy – Spaceballs

Welcome moviephiles to new episode of the Reel Film Nerds!  Today we have an amazing Legacy Cast for you, Spaceballs!!  This movie was requested by Matt’s buddy and co-worker Derek Nanke, thanks Derek for the request!  Right off the bat things start to get crazy in this pod!  Matt talks about his dad taking him to see Spaceballs in the theater as a kid.  He also talks about Star Wars probably too much but how you can not right Spaceballs is 95% of a rip on Star Wars!  Mike explains where his obsession with male genitalia came from and how much fun he had watching this movie.  Matt typically watches it at least once a year but Mike has not seen Spaceballs in a very long time!  Sit back relax and grab a big glass of water to help with your 4th of July hangover because this is a long pod, almost a full hour!

Clearly Matt and Mike both love this movie without question.  Mike loved it a teensy bit more than Matt probably because he has not seen Spaceballs as an adult!  Mike hands out the very first perfect rating in the history of the Reel Film Nerds with a 5 out of 5 Reels!!!  Matt loves Spaceballs without question but he does not think it is perfect, damn close but not perfect.  He gives Spaceballs a 4.5 out of 5 Reels.  Thank you for subscribing and listening to our podcast!  We will talk at you next Tuesday with another Reel Film Nerds movie review!

Episode #26: Sicario: Day of the Soldado

Welcome friends to the latest Reel Film Nerds podcast!  This week Matt and Mike talk about Sicario: Day of the Soldado.  They start out with some fun and interesting updates related to the podcast before getting into the review.  We were reviewed by Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting.  You can read his notes and listen to his podcast on us at Podcast Rodeo Show.  Do you agree with Dave’s assessment?  Let us know what you think especially if there is something you think we need to improve or that we are doing right.

Matt continues being off topic talking about how you can now listen to our podcast on your Amazon Echo using the Alexa Any Pod skill.  Once the skill is installed all you have to say is “Alexa, open AnyPod.”  After the greeting, say “Play Reel Film Nerds” and your Echo will play the latest episode of the Reel Film Nerds!  Pretty awesome right?

Mike and Matt both love the original Sicario and agree that it did not need a sequel but we got one anyways.  Mike really did not like this movie no matter how much fun Matt has saying Soldado over and over.  Matt thought it was passable until the third act of the film.  It just gets weird and starts to fall apart.  The acting was great, the sets were ok, the cinematography is decent, but the story was just really bad.  Mike gives Sicario: Day of the Soldado a 2 out of 5 Reels and suggests no one go see it in the theaters unless you have Movie Pass.  Matt enjoyed the film more than Mike until the end and it ruined the entire movie for him.  He gives it a 3.5 out of 5 Reels and strongly suggests if you do want to see it to watch the original first.
