Episode #63: Bohemian Rhapsody

Welcome, welcome, welcome to another installment of the Reel Film Nerds podcast!  Well Matt did it, he braved the Appalachian Mountains to hunt down Mysterious Mike and record a new pod.  Today the boys talk about an incredible biopic on Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody.  Can you believe it the RFN podcast made a top 40 list of the best movie podcasts on the planet?  We are at the 40th spot on the list but we made it!  You can check it out on the Feedspot blog along with all the other winners.  We are in some national company if you can believe it, we can’t.  Topics today include Mike’s wedding to Maniacal Mags, going to concerts, time travel, and our sister podcasts Rogues Radio, Code 3 Podcast, The Blue Milk Podcast, and The Mile High Show.

Bohemian Rhapsody is an amazing film peering into the life and formation of the band Queen focusing on their lead singer Freddie Mercury.  The story is great but it leaves something to be desired.  There just was not enough of Mercury’s back story or enough on the other band members.  It also checks the boxes for every band biopic trope.  The stand out performance of Rami Malek embodying Mercury is unbelievable!  If he is not nominated for an Academy Award Matt will lose his mind.  The soundtrack is incredible of course and the Live Aid scenes are so realistic it feels like you are there!  Matt and Mike both agree that this film is a solid 4 out of 5 Reels.  It is a must see in a movie theater if for nothing more than Malek’s performance and the incredible soundtrack.

The guys are back in full swing and hope to stay that way for the foreseeable future.  Next week look forward to their reviews of the Nazi zombie horror flick Overlord and a brand new Netflix original movie Outlaw King.  Thanks for sticking with us and landing us on a top 40 list.  Make sure to tell your friends about us and don’t forget to rate and review our show.  Chat at you next week!

Episode #62: Legacy – Last Flag Flying

Hi everyone and welcome back!  We have been on a little bit of a break the past week, but we return to you today with a vengeance!  Ok well Matt returns with a vengeance, Mysterious Mike is M.I.A. after his recent nuptials.  I am guessing he is doing this thing called a honeymoon?  Single guys like Matt will never know what that is.  Back on topic, today Matt talks about Last Flag Flying an Amazon Studio’s original starring Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne, and Steve Carell.

Last Flag Flying is a very serious film that discusses a difficult but important topic.  It does get a little political here and there but how can you not when discussing the death of a young soldier?  The acting is incredible, the sets are great, but the story is what really sets this one apart.  It is nice having some well-timed and appropriate humor that helps with the very serious subject matter.  Matt really enjoyed Last Flag Flying and gives it 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Thank you liking, subscribing, and supporting our little pod.  Matt will do his best to wrangle up Mysterious Mike for Thursday where we will be discussing a biopic that is taking the country by storm, Bohemian Rhapsody.  Chat at you then!

Episode #61: Harvest Horror Fest – Cabin in the Woods

Well listeners we are sorry to say but the end is here but man is it an amazing end!  For the final episode of Harvest Horror Fest 2018 your hosts Mike and Matt discuss the comedy horror flick Cabin in the Woods.  This is one of our longer episodes but sit tight it is fun and worth a listen.  Topics include Marvel, horror tropes, Joss Whedon, Thor, Signals AZ, and we have more than 4 listeners?  How did that happen?

Cabin in the Woods is a near perfect blend of two genres.  It is fun, dramatic, and exciting to name a few.  The acting is stellar especially the little known actors that star in this film.  The story is really where Cabin in the Woods shines though.  This is a must watch film for everyone.  Mike really enjoyed it and awards the movie a near perfect score with 4.5 out of 5 Reels.  Matt truly loves Cabin in the Woods even though he is not a huge horror movie guy.  He drops the elusive perfect score with 5 out of 5 Reels!  Seriously if you have not seen Cabin in the Woods do yourself a favor and watch it.

Just a reminder listeners the coming week or two might be a little light on the podcast front.  Mike is having a lot of life things happening that I guess are more important than watching movies.  Matt will also be busy with regular work and the NAZ Suns 2018-19 season starting but he is going to try his hardest to record a few shows solo or with some special guests.  Thanks for tuning in and we hope you enjoyed Harvest Horror Fest!  We did so expect it to become an annual event.  Have a great weekend and welcome to November!

Episode #60: A Star Is Born

Welcome faithful followers to another prodigious podcast of the Reel Film Nerds hosted by your buddies Mysterious Mike and Matt Hinshaw.  Today the movie geeks discuss what will probably be an Academy Award winning film, A Star Is Born starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.  Matt and Mike really dive deep into this film both being not only movie aficionados but also huge music fans.  They talk about the music industry, addiction, Metallica, their home state of Arizona, and this thing called the radio that is like podcasting but through the air?

A Star Is Born is an incredible directorial debut for Bradley Cooper.  The song choice and the singing were real treats and not to be missed.  Lady Gaga did an incredible job acting.  It was almost like this role was written for her.  Bonus tip there is a documentary about Lady Gaga on Netflix called Gaga: Five Foot Two that is a nice companion piece to this film.  Mike and Matt both really enjoyed A Star Is Born.  They line up on their rating again awarding it 4 out of 5 Reels.  This movie is well worth the money so make sure to go see it in a theater.

Episode #59: Harvest Horror Fest – Event Horizon

Harvest Horror Fest is quickly ending but not quite yet.  Today Mysterious Mike and Masterful Matt talk about one of their favorite sci-fi/horror films ever Event Horizon!  Topics include isolation, haunted houses, The Matrix, Jurassic Park, and of course space.

Event Horizon is an incredible must-see film especially if you are a horror or sci-fi buff.  It is claustrophobic and thrilling.  The CGI needs some help, but it is a 21-year-old movie.  The other visuals and sets are amazing especially the gravity drive.  The makeup and gore are very well done and do nothing but elevate this horror film.  Matt and Mike are starting to click again maybe too much.  They both give Event Horizon 4.5 out of 5 Reels!

Thanks for your continued support and make sure to share our pod if you like it or not!  Mike and Matt will return on Tuesday with our review of a probable big time Academy Award contender A Star is Born starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
