Episode #166: Legacy – Road to Perdition

Welcome everyone to pandemic day number ah who cares it’s way too many already. Today we continue visiting films from Mike and Matt’s past with an amazing prohibition era gangster father and son film Road to Perdition starring Tom Hanks, Jude Law, and Paul Newman. Special topics today include genre blending, Tiger King, a movie giveaway, and bidet’s.

Road to Perdition is an incredible film and a must watch if you have not seen it already. It’s currently streaming on Netflix. The cinematography is award winning, the casting is spot on, and the acting is on another level. Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, in his final role, play off of each other very well especially when they switch from friend to foe. Child actor at the time Tyler Hoechlin is incredible as the son of Mike Sullivan, Hanks, who witnesses a bit too much of his father’s work. Hoechlin has expanded his career greatly in the past 18 years and it is well deserved. Mike and Matt cannot give enough praise to this film. It is Sam Mendes’ second film after American Beauty and he has truly become one of the greatest directors working today. Mike and Matt both award 2002’s Road to Perdition 4.5 out of 5 Reels.

Episode #165: Legacy – The Stoned Age

Hi everybody! We hope everyone is staying safe and locked up in their homes watching movies and listening to podcasts. Today Mysterious Mike Talent and Matt Hinshaw review a classic film from their high school days, The Stoned Age. Bonus topics include ex girlfriends, baseball coming back, and coming of age films.

The Stoned Age is a fun comedic story about a pair of high school buddies cursing town in the blue torpedo looking to party and find some chicks. There have been some incredible coming of age movies since this film came out but The Stoned Age was a pioneer with Dazed and Confused for the genre in the mid 90’s. The plot is fun and takes a couple of wild turns especially when the floating eyeball is introduced. The acting is decent. It is rough at times but a lot of these actors were very young and early in their careers so you have to cut them some slack. It is not really a stoner comedy, The Stoned Age is more about getting into trouble on a Saturday night by friends, cops, and parents. To put it lightly it is not a politically correct film and probably would not be made today. Is this a must see film, probably not. It is a fun romp and a perfect film to revisit for your hosts during our current home lock downs. It is worth a watch if you are having a few drinks late at night trying to avoid the news. Mike and Matt both agree this movie is probably pulling a lot of nostalgia for their ratings. They both award the film 3 out of 5 Reels.

Episode #164: Legacy – Clue (1985)

Check it out a new Reel Film Nerds podcast! I guess it’s better late than never right? With the world coming to an end and a new life for one of our hosts it is tough to be on a schedule every week. Matt and Mike promise to continue to do their best to put out a weekly film review even though movie theaters are shut down. This week Matt and Mike review a classic film from 1985, Clue currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Bonus topics include poverty, slapstick comedies, and streaming fatigue, really Mike fatigue?

Clue is an iconic fun comedy that everyone needs to enjoy. The script is nothing special and it is definitely not for our current PC culture. Where this board game based movie really excels is it’s performances especially Tim Curry. His over the top acting is a true delight to behold. Christopher Lloyd, Madeline Kahn, and Michael McKean also bring a ton to this ensemble comedy but Curry is definitely the star. The whodunit story is tried and true with a few twists and turns thrown in but it is nothing you haven’t seen before. It is not an incredible story but it is a lot of fun especially the multiple endings. Mike and Matt both really enjoyed this nostalgic film from their childhoods both awarding it 4 out of 5 Reels.

The pandemic and movie theater apocalypse continues so your hosts have no choice but to continue visiting classic comedies from their youth to try to help everyone stay in good spirits. Next pod Mike and Matt will review another comedy but his one is from 1994. The Stoned Age takes place over a single night in the 1970’s following two stoners cruising LA looking for chicks. Episode #149: Legacy – Wish Man

Sorry everyone but Matt messed up bad last week. He claimed we were reviewing Jumanji: The Next Level but regretfully it’s not out yet. He was honestly looking at the wrong week on the release calendar. Don’t hate him more than usual. Instead there was an exciting new Netflix release last week of a film made in Prescott, Wish Man. Not Wish Man related topics today include Die Hard, Blanton’s Bourbon, and the incredible beauty of northern Arizona.

Wish Man is an extremely well acted and written film based on the life of Prescott hero Frank Shankwitz founder of Make a Wish. Frank’s story is very emotional on many levels both good and bad. The sets are beautiful and perfect for the time period. If you live or have experienced much of Prescott, Ariz. you will recognize most if not all of the locations they used. There are a handful of minor missteps in the film. A couple of the flashbacks were not presented well and came off confusing. The child actors did well but could have been better. They are kids and we are sure they did their best so you can’t hold it against them. In the end Mike and Matt both agree Wish Man is a must see film. Go watch it now and tell everyone you know to watch it too. Hopefully this is not becoming a trend for the guys but they agree on a rating for the second week in a row! Matt and Mike both give Wish Man 4.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys will finally return to the theaters to watch the sequel to the 2017 surprise hit Jumanji: The Next Level, honest that is what we will be reviewing and hopefully with a special guest, Mrs. Talent!! Thanks for hanging out with us and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #135: Legacy – The Rock

A new month and a new Wednesday means a new podcast for your ear holes. Today Mike and Matt get around to another Legacy Cast this one though is not a request but from Matt’s Legacy list. Today the hosts take a look back at a Michael Bay masterpiece, according to Mike Talent, 1996’s The Rock. Bonus topics include Mike won the lottery, we miss watching Sean Connery on the big screen, and violence in movies, music, video games etc.

The Rock is a classic 90’s action movie that helped put Michael Bay on the map as one of the best action film directors working today. Up until The Rock he mostly directed music videos and another little action film you might have heard of Bad Boys. The Rock is the complete package. It has incredible acting, amazing action sequences, and a compelling story about a prison inmate no one has ever heard of. It definitely shows it’s age compared to the modern action film but still holds up pretty well. Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, and Ed Harris bring some of their best acting to the table with this film. The chemistry between our two heroes is great to say the least. Ed Harris gives us amazing nuances and dedication to his craft as a villian with honor. His character is ultimately trying to achieve recognition for overlooked soldiers who gave all but has the wits to not add innocent blood shed to do it in the end. Mike Talent loves this movie with a passion, almost as much as he loves Jaws and that’s saying a lot! He gives The Rock one of his very rare perfect ratings of 5 out of 5 Reels. Matt really enjoyed the film as well but felt it has not aged as gracefully as he remembers it. He awards it a respectful 4 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys hit the theaters to watch a film that is already generating a ton of controversy and buzz, Todd Phillips’ Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix. Matt and Mike are both extremely excited to see this film and give you their honest opinions for our faithful few listeners.
