Episode #230: Tributary – The Tomorrow War

Happy Wednesday peeps! Today Matt and Mike sit down and chat about the Amazon Prime Original sci-fi flick The Tomorrow War starring Chris Pratt and Yvonne Strahovski. Not time travel topics include The Thing, Blanton’s, and we need more Mags!

Wow, what a fun concept for a sci-fi film. Traveling back in time to draft your parents and grandparents to fight in a future war against aliens. This is what sci-fi is all about! The Tomorrow War is a fun action packed thriller you should take time out of your day to enjoy. Is this one going to win any awards or finally bring Matt to award 5 Reels, nope, but it is a heck of a fun time. The aliens are really well done and the action sequences are fast paced and intense. One of a handful of issues is that the film is very long. Sometimes it can really drag while other times the story feels rushed. Mike Talent thinks it would have been better as a mini series to really dive deep into the characters and world building. Both of your hosts agree The Tomorrow War is well worth a watch. Mike with the surprise almost perfect score awards the film 4.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt with a decent rating but not as favored gives it an average score with 3 out of 5 Reels.

Next week Mike and Matt switch streaming services to Netflix to check out the action pack assassin film Gunpowder Milkshake starring Karen Gillian and Lena Headey. Thank you for your continued support of our podcast and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #229: Black Widow

It’s been two whole years since a new Marvel Cinematic Universe film hit theaters. Black Widow is finally here but was it worth the wait? Bonus topics today include Mike throws some DC shade, cellphones, and the never ending streaming wars.

So let’s just get this out of the way right now, no. Black Widow was definitely not worth the wait. In fact it is probably 10 years too late. Is it a bad film, no. Just not what Mike and Matt anticipated or wanted to see. Black Widow is great but for a MCU movie it is mediocre. The acting was excellent, especially newcomer Florence Pugh, the story was just OK, and there definitely was not enough action. Taskmaster oh poor Taskmaster you were woefully under used. Why does the MCU have such difficulties with villains? Thanos was great, Killmonger was great, but man was this film’s villain a let down. With all that out of the way Black Widow is still a great movie and you should see it in the theater if you feel comfortable. Mike Talent gives the kick off to MCU Phase 4 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt not too far ahead awards the film 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week Mike and Matt tackle the really interesting Amazon Prime Original Sci-Fi flick The Tomorrow War. Thank you for your continued support of our podcast and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #228: The Forever Purge

Are you ready to purge? Welcome kiddos to Reel Film Nerds Episode #228: The Forever Purge starring Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta, and Josh Lucas. Not purgy topics include the Yarnell 19, Top Gun: Maverick (yes again), and racism.

Did you like the other purge movies up to this point? If your answer was an ear shattering yes then this film is for you. It is, in the words of Mike Talent, the least purgy purge movie of all of them but it is still very violent and political. The Forever Purge has lots of political statements throughout the film and an uncanny similarity to the past year in the United States even though filming was finished before the pandemic. The acting, sets, and special effects were all terrific. The story is decent and thought provoking but it is still the same old purge storyline in many respects. Mike Talent thinks the conclusion to The Purge franchise is worth a watch in the theaters awarding it 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt again being the harsh one says to wait until it comes out on a streaming service giving the film 2 out of 5 Reels.

For next week’s film we FINALLY get to see the kick off to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 Black Widow!!!!! This is it people, there is still hope for the movie theaters yet. Thank you for supporting our podcast and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #227: F9: The Fast Saga

Welcome to our family everyone! Yes, the Reel Film Nerds family. This week Matt and Mike chat about another summer blockbuster but this one has been marinating for over a year! That’s right kids it’s finally here F9: The Fast Saga is out for your viewing pleasure. Not family related topics include Subway, 40’s, and space.

The Fast and Furious franchise continues with F9 the most ridiculous film of the 10 movie saga. Was F9 worth the year long wait, heck no but it was a lot of fun to watch and laugh at. The action is great, unrealistic, and extremely over the top just like we expect. There is a very big lull in the action halfway through the movie with lots of back story. Some of it is welcome, especially the explanation to why Dom has a brother and why you and I have never heard of him before now. It does really slow down the film a lot though. The acting was fine and on par with the rest of the films. It is just so over the top unrealistic it’s laughable.

Should you run out and watch F9, sure why not but only if you love this series or really need a break for two and a half hours. Mike the ever optimist awards the movie 2 out of 5 Reels. Matt comes in a smidge below giving F9  1.5 out of 5 Reels.

For next week Mike is really loving Hollywood’s summer movie roll out, and takes us back to the theaters to catch The Forever Purge.  Thank you for supporting our podcast and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #226: The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard

Hi everyone and welcome to another pod! Today’s review is on The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, and Antonio Banderas. Additional topics include Loki, car collecting, and the Desperado Trilogy

This is the movie everyone needs right now. A great action comedy to help bring back movie goers for the summer. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is packed full of action and comedy just like the original but turns it up to 11. The star studded cast only adds to the fun, especially Morgan Freeman and his unexpected character. The stunts are fantastic and over the top, especially the practical effects. The plot, now that is another story. It wasn’t awful but it could have been a lot better. The duo of Ryan Reynolds and Salma Hayek is definitely not as strong as the Reynolds Jackson duo from the original.

Mike Talent suggests you do not miss this amazing sequel especially in the theaters awarding it a 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt back with a lower score enjoyed the film but doesn’t think it’s worth the visit, wait for on demand. He awards The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard an ok score with 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

For next week Mike continues our trek to the theaters to watch a film that was pushed a full year thanks to the VID, F9.  If this film has as many crazy stunts and action as the rest of the franchise it is a must see in the theaters! Thank you for supporting our podcast and we will chat at you next week.
