Episode #168: Tributary – Code 8

Welcome kiddos! Are you sick of watching TV, movies, and listening to the Reel Film Nerds podcast yet? No? Great, neither are we so here is a fresh one for your ear holes. Today Mike Talent and Matt checked out an independent Sci-Fi film that Netflix purchased recently Code 8. Not Code 8 topics include Zoom Meetings, the joys of breeding, and Parks and Recreation.

Code 8 is a really great fun action packed Sci-Fi movie. It is perfect right now to help keep your mind off being stuck inside. It takes place in an alternate universe where a percentage of the population basically has superpowers. Oh and there are these sick robots that were created to help police the troublemaker supers. The story and the special effects are the absolute best part of this film. It is astonishing what they were able to do on an independent budget. The acting well it’s a little rough. It is not awful by any means it just could have been better. Mike and Matt really enjoyed this film and do suggest you sit down and watch it. Regretfully though they keep landing on the same rating!! This week makes 5 reviews in a row where they agreed, so boring! They both give Code 8 a respectable 3 out of 5 Reels.

Next week is Matt’s pick and boy did he grab a great watch. It is a film by a little director you might have heard of Martin Scorsese. The film though is one you might not have heard of. It is from 1999 titled Bringing Out the Dead. If you have Amazon Prime it is currently streaming on Prime Video for free. Episode #163: Tributary – Spenser Confidential

Good news everyone looks like we are back on our regular schedule again, hopefully it lasts. The world is literally breaking down all around us but hey we did a podcast!

Today Matt and Mike start a series of streaming and classic movie reviews since you know movie theaters are all closed right now. Our first film up to bat is Mark Wahlberg’s latest Netflix Original Spenser Confidential. Topics better than this movie include the future of movies and theaters, we need money especially since Matt probably won’t have a job too much longer, and Doom Eternal helps pass the time when not watching films.

Spenser Confidential is an ok movie. The script is rough, very rough. It is an action movie with some decent action but it is too little too late in the film. The acting is fine, nothing special but nothing horrible either. The picture overall is very predictable. There are twists and turns and whodunits but you can figure any and all of them out way ahead of time. Is this movie worth your time especially now since everyone has so much time being locked up in their homes? Short answer, no. Go watch a movie that is really good that you have or have not seen. This one is a pass. Mysterious Mike gives Spenser Confidential 2 out of 5 Reels. Matt is a bit easier on the movie but not by much he awards it 2.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next pod which might be later this week but most likely next week we turn to a tried and true 1980’s classic that will hopefully lift all of our spirits Clue. Episode #161: Tributary – Game Over, Man!

Hi everybody and welcome to the writing for an introduction to the latest Reel Film Nerds podcast! Was that confusing? I know I am confused, anyways today your hosts Mike and Matt review a film that you definitely should not waste your time watching. The Netflix Original starring the guys from Workaholics, Game Over, Man! Off topics more entertaining than this film include emoji, stoner movies, and your hosts are old.

Seriously, do not watch this movie. It is not a great way to spend your time at all. It does have its moments with a handful of great bits but there are just too few to help rescue it’s awful and confusing story. The acting is fine, the sets are nothing special, and the story once again in trash. The guys had such a hard time talking about this one that they mostly were off topic for the entire podcast. They are fun off topics and maybe too extreme but we are sure someone might be entertained at least for a little bit. Matt always being the nice guy that he is (Matt you really need to work on that especially in life), gives Game Over, Man! 2 out of 5 Reels. Mysterious Mike Talent with surprising leniency gives this sad excuse for a movie 1.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys hit the theaters for what looks to be a really great horror film take on a classic character starring Elisabeth Moss, The Invisible Man. Thanks for tuning in to our little pod and we will chat at you next week!

Episode #154: Tributary – 6 Underground

Welcome fellow film geeks! Today Mike Talent and Matt discuss the most Michael Bay film Michael Bay has ever Michael Bayed in history, the Netflix original 6 Underground starring Ryan Reynolds. Not Michael Bay related topics include not so smart assistants, Kirby Chambliss, and selfies.

6 Underground is a really fun movie with tons of incredible over the top action. This is one of the few straight to Netflix films that definitely would be better to watch in a theater. The biggest issue this movie has is the story and that is a very big deal to both of your hosts. The acting is great for the most part. Ryan Reynolds comes off as just collecting a paycheck though. He is not terrible in 6 Underground but he also does nothing that’s worth talking about either. Mike Talent enjoyed the film but was very disappointed by the story and acting giving the film 2 out of 5 Reels. Matt also thought this movie could have been better except for the action and stunts, he loved them. He gives 6 Underground a score of 3 out of 5 Reels.

Possibly later this week we will discuss a second Tributary film with our review of The Two Popes starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. Based on true events of the transition of power from Pope Benedict to Pope Francis. Finally, next week we will be reviewing a film your hosts are extremely excited about Sam Mendes’ 1917. A story following two British soldiers during World War I who are tasked with delivering a message behind enemy lines. Episode #148: Tributary – The Irishman

Welcome to December everyone! You can now safely decorate for Christmas, thank you to everyone who waited. This week the guys stayed home and watched the biggest film release of the long holiday weekend Martin Scorsese’s latest gangster film The Irishman. Extra special topics today include de-aging, Mike and Matt throw shade at each other, and structure?

The Irishman is an incredible film with a great story saturated with history. It is classic Scorsese at his best! Yes it is a long film, very long but worth it. Do yourself a favor and try to watch it in one sitting. It will be difficult, especially with the ease of streaming shows and movies today but it is honestly the best way to watch The Irishman. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci do we really need to say more? They were just incredible along with the excellent and vast supporting cast. The de-aging effects were well done for the most part. There are a few times when the effect doesn’t look quite right but overall it is remarkable what film makers can do today. The Irishman is a great film and well worth a watch. If you have it in a theater near you definitely see it there but it is in super limited release. This movie for sure will be making waves at the Academy Awards early next year. Matt and Mike in the extremely rare occasion agree on a rating giving Scorsese’s latest masterpiece 4 out of 5 Reels.
