Episode #73: Mortal Engines

Merry almost Christmas everyone!  Today we have a review of a movie you should never see, Mortal Engines.  The guys don’t mess around and just get right into it with this review, this is a bad movie.  Topics today included the Mars TV show, Steve Carell, and Mike taking notes again.

Mortal Engines is just a terrible movie.  The only redeeming part is the visual effects and the first 30 minutes that actually has a predator city chasing down another city.  Seriously that’s it in a movie based on predator cities one damn chase scene!  There is no character development at all.  The script poorly written, it comes off as a third movie in a trilogy when it’s the start of a new franchise?  Mortal Engines also rips off so many sci-fi and fantasy films including Star Wars that we lost count.  Mike flat out blasted this movie.  He really tore it apart more than usual.  He graciously gives Mortal Engines ½ a Reel out of 5.  Matt was very disappointed by this film.  He had very high hopes for it because it appears to be a very cool and fun world to tell stories in.  This first attempt failed miserably though.  He gives the film a more lenient score with 1.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys keep the reviews coming!  They are both out watching as many of the new films hitting the theaters as possible.  Reviews next week include the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Robert Zemeckis’ Welcome to Marwen but they might toss in a few quick reviews to let you know what to see over your holiday break.  Chat with all of you next week and we hope you get lots of awesome movies for Christmas!

Episode #72: The Mule (2018)

Morning everyone and welcome to another episode of the Reel Film Nerds podcast!  Winter Movie-pocalypse 2018 is upon us and your hosts start it out with Clint Eastwood’s latest masterwork The Mule (2018).  Mysterious Mike and Mean Matt do get off topic a bit in this pod, but it is hard to talk about Clint Eastwood and not about Westerns.  Topics today include That’s What She Said, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Deadwood.

The Mule (2018) is another stellar film from one of our acting and directing greats.  The casting is spot on, the story is incredible, and Clint Eastwood’s performance is one for the books.  Mike loved The Mule (2018) and thinks everyone should watch it but seeing it in the theater is not a must.  Matt agrees it was an incredible film, but he compares it to some of Eastwood’s other great films and feels it falls a tiny bit short of them.  They both award The Mule (2018) with 4 out of 5 Reels.

This Thursday the guys continue Winter Movie-pocalypse 2018 with another new podcast review of a film that was released this past weekend, Mortal Engines.  Spoiler Alert for the podcast and the movie, it is crap!  Seriously don’t see this film but do listen to our podcast.  Mike comes out of his shell a bit and just tears this movie apart.  Chat with you on Thursday!

Episode #71: Legacy – Fred Claus

Welcome fellow movie lovers to another exciting installment of the Real Film Nerds Podcast.  I am not going to beat around the bush on this one.  We started to talk about our latest film Fred Claus, but it quickly turned into a discussion about Kevin Spacey and if we should be watching the films he stars in.  It is a fascinating discussion about art and film that is worth listening too.  Fred Claus just took a back seat for a while, a long while.  The guys also discuss how many movies a year does it take to call yourself a reviewer, its not as many as you would guess.

Fred Claus is basically the Christmas movie Matt would make but without the happy ending.  This movie can be very dark and funny at the same time.  The cast is fantastic and the acting is pretty solid too.  Mike does not hate Fred Claus but it is nothing special to him either.  He gives it 3 out of 5 Reels.  Matt likes the film quite a bit especially the story.  He gives Fred Claus 4 out of 5 Reels.

Movie-pocalypse starts this Friday!  The guys are going to try to see as many movies they can and tell you if they are worth spending your hard-earned money on.  It will be very difficult to have individual podcasts for each film so keep your ears out for possible podcast combos.  We will return on Tuesday with a fresh new dose of the Reel Film Nerds Podcast!

Episode #70: Legacy – Unsane

Hello there and welcome another new RFN podcast.  We can’t quit you!  Today our hosts review a film from earlier this year that was not in the theaters long, Unsane.  Today’s review was requested from one of our faithful listeners, Patrick!  Thanks, Pat, for your support and keep listening and requesting.  Mysterious Mike and Matt stay on point for once with this movie.  Extracurricular topics include iPhones, The Girl in the Spider’s Web book and movie, and the importance of story in a film.

Unsane is a phycological thriller with great acting, an amazing story, and believe it or not the film was shot on a damn iPhone!  This one never lets up and constantly has you questioning who is the sane and who is not until the very end of the movie.  Matt really enjoyed this film but had a few little complaints here and there but nothing major.  He gives it 3.5 out of 5 Reels.  Mike too really enjoyed this film but is almost always harsher than Matt when it comes to his ratings.  He gives Unsane 3 Reels out of 5.  Basically, they both agree this is a must-see film especially if you have Amazon Prime where you can currently stream it.

Thanks for tuning in for another episode of two nerds talking about movies.  Please do us a favor and tell your friends about the RFN podcast.  Don’t forget to subscribe and listen to our sister podcasts Rogues Radio, Code 3 Podcast, The Blue Milk Podcast, and The Mile High Show.

Episode #69: Legacy – Hackers

Wow do we have a special podcast for you today, well it’s special to Mysterious Mike and Amazing Matt.  Today your two hosts discuss a film that basically changed their lives, Hackers.  This film helped fuel them to the careers they now have and their deep passions for technology.  The gents do talk about the movie but not as much as they should have.  The talk mainly focuses on how Hackers helped influence Mike’s decision to go into computer programming, public pay phones, and online gaming over dial up, yes you read that right youngsters dial up online gaming!

Hackers is an amazing movie, Matt and Mike are biased as hell though.  When you watch it today with all our technological advances it comes off extremely cheesy.  It’s a 90’s movie through and through from the rollerblades, to the EDM soundtrack, to the chain wallets.  If you grew up in the 90’s like your hosts did this movie will take you back there. Just a friendly reminder that your hosts are super biased in favor of this film, they love it to death!  Mike and Matt give Hackers 4 out of 5 Reels.  Their freshman high school selves would have given it 5 out of 5 Reels in the 90’s but it’s not the 90’s anymore.

Thanks for tuning in for an amazing Legacy Cast of Hackers.  Your hosts really had a blast recording it even if you don’t like listening to it.  Please do us a favor and tell your friends about the RFN podcast.  Don’t forget to subscribe and listen to our sister podcasts Rogues Radio, Code 3 Podcast, The Blue Milk Podcast, and The Mile High Show.  We return next week with two more movie reviews and one will be a Christmas movie.  Tis the season, right?  Have an amazing weekend and we will yack at ya on Tuesday.
