Episode #171: Tributary – Extraction

Hello fellow movie buffs and listeners both new and old. Is anyone else really missing movie theaters yet? Mike and Matt are especially some of the new releases we were promised. Fear not for today’s Reel Film Nerds Podcast Matt picked a brand spanking new Netflix Original starring Chris Hemsworth, Extraction. Off topics today include CEO salaries, the Rambo franchise, and a lengthy discussion at the end of the pod about how Netflix makes money.

Extraction is a decent action film with a story that is very familiar. It is not a bad story; it has just been done over and over again in multiple different variations but better. The acting throughout the film was great. Nothing special but it was not bad either. One of the shining stars of the film is it’s location. Isn’t it nice to see Hollywood expand their filming locations outside of LA, New York, London, and Atlanta? Extraction is not a must watch for most people but you won’t be disappointed if you do. The action is very good so if you are an action buff it is well worth your time. Hopefully the guys are finally getting back on track with their opinions.  Mysterious Mike gives Extraction 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt who is always a bit kinder than Mike gives the kidnap action romp 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Mike is feeling a bit down and out being locked up at home with a brand new baby all the time. He really wants to laugh and have a good time. For next week he picked a classic that is currently streaming on Netflix, Back to the Future! We might even do a Back to the Future retrospective over the next three podcasts. What do you think? Episode #146: Ford v Ferrari

Welcome to Wednesday everyone!  The week is halfway over and your host’s Mike and Matt are here to help by chatting about an incredible film!  Today the guys review James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon.  Bonus topics today include Gallup New Mexico, The Mandalorian, and Adam Carolla’s The 24 Hour War.

Ford V Ferrari is truly an amazing film.  This true story is exciting and intricate, the acting is incredible especially Bale and Damon’s chemistry, and the cinematography is down right gorgeous. This film is not only for car lovers it is for everyone.  Yes cars are the focus of the film but honestly it’s about relationships, working hard, and family. Matt and Mike both agree this is a must see in the theater.  The visuals paired with the incredible sound mixing really deserves to be experienced in the best way possible. Matt really liked Ford v Ferrari, he gives it 4 out of 5 Reels.  Mike also really enjoyed the movie but as expected he is a bit harsher than Matt awarding the film 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week Tom Hanks returns to the big screen to portray one of the most loved and respected men in America Fred Rogers in the film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.  If you have not checked it out yet make sure you watch 2018’s documentary on Mr. Rogers titled Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Episode #144: Terminator: Dark Fate

Wednesday is here again and we are back to our one pod a week schedule.  Mike and Matt hope you enjoyed our Second Annual Harvest Horror Fest and look forward to next year’s.  Today your hosts jump head first into a robot Sci-Fi sequel Terminator: Dark Fate.  Not robots from the future topics include McDonald’s fries, what is woke, and CGI.

This is probably the most divided Matt and Mike have been on a film in a very long time.  Mike loved the latest installment of the Terminator franchise and well Matt did not to put it mildly.  They both agree the action was great, the acting was fantastic, and most of the CGI was very good.  The film flowed well but the issue at least for Matt was the plot. He claims it is the exact same plot as The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day smashed together and updated for today’s generation.  Sound familiar Star Wars fans?  Mike Talent enjoyed this film and did not disparage Matt for having a different opinion than him.  Matt did the exact opposite but Mike kept to his guns giving the film 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt just can’t get over the reuse of the classic Terminator story yet again.  He gives Terminator: Dark Fate 2.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week we will review another Stephen King novel based horror thriller.  How many are we up to now in 2019, four?  Seriously? Let’s see there was Pet Sematary, It: Chapter Two, In the Tall Grass (streaming on Netflix but it counts!) and lastly the movie we will be reviewing Doctor Sleep.  Man King must be just rolling around on a pile of money like Huell and Kuby!  Don’t forget to listen to Matt and Leza on Magic 99.1 between 8:45 AM and 9:00 AM every Monday morning.  If you are not in Prescott you can still listen online at this link.  Thanks for hanging out with us and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #140: Zombieland: Double Tap

Welcome listeners both new and old to another fantastical movie review by your loud mouth buddies Mike Talent and Matt Hinshaw.  Today the dismal dynamic duo discuss a sequel 10 years in the making Zombieland: Double Tap.  Not zombie related topics include Jones Soda, Mike’s criminal history, and double features.

Zombieland: Double Tap is a fun sequel to a groundbreaking horror comedy that took way too long to come out.  It’s amazing they were able to get the main cast members to reprise their roles after such a long period of time.  Especially since most of them have moved on to bigger and better films winning all kinds of awards to boot! Zomibeland: Double Tap does nothing new to add to the zombie genre or Zombieland world and that is ok.  We get a handful of new characters and places with some of the same old tropes of the previous film.  There are some really fun scenes and really annoying characters that make this just a fun film to enjoy with friends and family.  Is it going to win any awards and jump start a whole new zombie craze, nope but it was a great time with a great story and great actors what more do you want out of a zombie film?  Mysterious Mike Talent loved Zombieland: Double Tap giving it an amazing score with 4 out of 5 Reels.  Matt also really enjoyed the film but thought it did nothing new.  There were a lot of fun scenes, great acting, and immersive sets but he felt that the movie could have gone farther.  He gives it a 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Thursday Harvest Horror fest starts winding down as we review slapstick horror comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space.  Can you believe self proclaimed horror fanatic Mike Talent has never seen it?  Neither can we! If you want to watch it before our review it is streaming right now on Amazon Prime Video.  Thanks for hanging out and listening to us, we will chat at you on Thursday.

Episode #138: Gemini Man

Let the two pods a week continue!  Today Mike and Matt discuss Ang Lee’s newest film starring two Will Smith’s, Gemini Man.  Topics more engaging than this film include Fargo the TV series, bingeing, and two Willy’s!

We won’t waste your time reading our show notes like we wasted our time seeing this movie, Gemini Man is not a good film.  It is not horrible but it is not worth the price of admission to a theater.  The script is just flat out awful. Matt thinks it might be because this project has bounced around Hollywood for 10 years ricocheting off of a slew of writers.  Will Smith’s acting is always great especially in both young and old roles.  Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an incredible actor but she felt under utilized in this film.  Most of the stunts and action sequences were great except one involving a motorcycle, it was complete fantasy to say the least.  The CGI young Will Smith looked great until he started talking.  There was just something really off whenever he talked.  Matt and Mike both agree you should not see this film in the theater.  Wait until it is on a streaming service you pay for or maybe rent it at Redbox but that might even be pushing it.  They both gracious award Gemini Man 2.5 out of 5 Reels.

Make sure to stay to the end of the pod.  Matt included his interview with Leza Live and Local on Magic 99.1 that aired yesterday.  Do you like the addition of his radio interview to our podcast?  Email us and let us know!  This Thursday Harvest Horror Fest continues with the 1984 Stephen King classic Children of the Corn.  It is streaming right now on Amazon Prime Video if you want to watch it before our next episode.  Thanks for listening and we will chat at you Thursday!
