Episode #312: Cocaine Bear

Welcome to March everyone. Can you believe how fast this year has rocketed by? For today’s pod Mike, Matt, and Ma Hinshaw chat about a film that is tearing up the box office Cocaine Bear directed by Elizabeth Banks. Not drug related animal topics include 8K, Movie Pass sucks again, and a new incredible Blu-ray giveaway.

This movie is exactly what we wanted, just not enough of it. Cocaine Bear is a high dollar B-movie with A-list stars and an amazing CGI bear. The biggest problem with this film is they did not push the boundaries harder. There are some really great over the top scenes and humor but they are too few and far between. Another big issue is the amount of stories in this film. There are a ton of characters, which is great, but they all have these pretty intricate stories. Why, why are there so many? A handful at best but better developed really would improve this film.

Matt and Mike both agree this is a wait until it’s streaming kinda movie. It is a ton of fun and if you want to go to the theaters please do but it’s not a must see film. Mike awards Cocaine Bear 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt is just a smidge lower with 2 out of 5 Reels. Of course we can’t forget Ma Hinshaw who just loves pretty much anything, she awards the movie 3.5 out of 5 cookies.

Next week Mike, Matt, and even Ma continue their theater going run with Guy Ritchie’s latest film Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre starring Jason Statham. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #272: Legacy – Top Gun

Do you have a need, a need for speed? Well then we have a podcast for you! Today in preparation for the new Top Gun Maverick, Matt and Mike sit down and chat about the 1986 original Top Gun. Starring Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Kelly McGillis. Not air combat training topics include call signs, new Top Gun school, and global politics in movies.

What can we say about the 1980’s naval aviator classic that hasn’t been said before, not much as we found out in the pod. Top Gun is an amazing movie! Yes it shows its age but in your host’s opinions it holds up well. Top Gun was shot well, acted well, had a great story, and even won an Oscar for best original song! Right now is a great time to re-watch this classic with your kids, friends, or loved ones before the sequel drops on Friday. Mike and Matt both agree Top Gun is a 5 Reel film all the way! It is a must watch piece of cinematic history especially if you are a fan of flying or beach volleyball.

For next week’s podcast Mike and Matt head to the theaters to finally watch Top Gun Maverick starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer. It was only supposed to be released in 2019 after all. Not that Matt’s anxious or anything, HA! Thanks for listening and reading to the end of our show notes. Chat at you next week!

Episode #238: Tributary – Jolt

Sorry everyone, we suck! Yeah we missed our normal pod day but hey we got er done. Matt and Mike are both very busy, especially Mike preparing to add to his brood. Today the guys chat about an Amazon Original, Jolt starring Kate Beckinsale and Stanley Tucci. Not action murder movie topics include westerns, Arizona Rattlers lose, and Y: The Last Man.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you mixed Jon Wick with Crank and tossed in some Kate Beckinsale, wonder no more! That film is here and it’s called Jolt. This flick is not going to win any awards but it sure is a ton of fun. Fast action, vibrant colors, a great cast, and a decent story, what else do you want? Beckinsale plays a character that can’t control her anger, subsequently leading her to self-inflicted shock therapy until she meets the man of her dreams. He is murdered by his boss and it is all out revenge for the rest of the film.

Mike and Matt both agree this is well worth the watch if you are into action or revenge movies. Mike awards Jolt a modest 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt rates the film a full reel higher with 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week Mike and Matt return to the theaters to catch Clint Eastwood’s latest Cry Macho. Hopefully we will record on time next week too. Thank you for your continued support of our podcast and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #171: Tributary – Extraction

Hello fellow movie buffs and listeners both new and old. Is anyone else really missing movie theaters yet? Mike and Matt are especially some of the new releases we were promised. Fear not for today’s Reel Film Nerds Podcast Matt picked a brand spanking new Netflix Original starring Chris Hemsworth, Extraction. Off topics today include CEO salaries, the Rambo franchise, and a lengthy discussion at the end of the pod about how Netflix makes money.

Extraction is a decent action film with a story that is very familiar. It is not a bad story; it has just been done over and over again in multiple different variations but better. The acting throughout the film was great. Nothing special but it was not bad either. One of the shining stars of the film is it’s location. Isn’t it nice to see Hollywood expand their filming locations outside of LA, New York, London, and Atlanta? Extraction is not a must watch for most people but you won’t be disappointed if you do. The action is very good so if you are an action buff it is well worth your time. Hopefully the guys are finally getting back on track with their opinions.  Mysterious Mike gives Extraction 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt who is always a bit kinder than Mike gives the kidnap action romp 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Mike is feeling a bit down and out being locked up at home with a brand new baby all the time. He really wants to laugh and have a good time. For next week he picked a classic that is currently streaming on Netflix, Back to the Future! We might even do a Back to the Future retrospective over the next three podcasts. What do you think? Email us and let us know if you want to hear us talk about one of the best film franchises in history. Thanks for checking our little review show. Chat at you next week.

Episode #163: Tributary – Spenser Confidential

Good news everyone looks like we are back on our regular schedule again, hopefully it lasts.  The world is literally breaking down all around us but hey we did a podcast!

Today Matt and Mike start a series of streaming and classic movie reviews since you know movie theaters are all closed right now.  Our first film up to bat is Mark Wahlberg’s latest Netflix Original Spenser Confidential.  Topics better than this movie include the future of movies and theaters, we need money especially since Matt probably won’t have a job too much longer, and Doom Eternal helps pass the time when not watching films.

Spenser Confidential is an ok movie.  The script is rough, very rough.  It is an action movie with some decent action but it is too little too late in the film.  The acting is fine, nothing special but nothing horrible either. The picture overall is very predictable.  There are twists and turns and whodunits but you can figure any and all of them out way ahead of time. Is this movie worth your time especially now since everyone has so much time being locked up in their homes?  Short answer, no. Go watch a movie that is really good that you have or have not seen. This one is a pass. Mysterious Mike gives Spenser Confidential 2 out of 5 Reels.  Matt is a bit easier on the movie but not by much he awards it 2.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next pod which might be later this week but most likely next week we turn to a tried and true 1980’s classic that will hopefully lift all of our spirits Clue.  It is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video so why not sit down and watch it this week with us? Thanks for tuning in to our little pod and don’t forget to tell your friends to listen too!  We will chat at you next week.

If you have a film you would like Matt and Mike Talent to review you can email us at nerds@reelfilmnerds.com, listeners we are talking to you.
