Episode #325: About My Father

Hello there everyone and welcome to this week’s Reel Film Nerds Podcast. Today Mike and Matt chat about a little comedy that just hit theaters, About My Father starring Robert De Niro, Sebastian Maniscalco, Leslie Bibb, and Kim Cattrall. Bonus topics today include movie remakes, Disney, and night farts.

Are you looking for a quick change from all the summer blockbusters? Then About My Father is right up your alley. It is a fun soulful comedy about a father and son meeting their rich future in-laws at their summer country club home. Robert De Niro is really flexing his comedy muscles as an Italian hairstylist immigrant just wanting what’s best for his son. Sebastian Maniscalco does a great job as himself trying to be the mediator between the two very different families.

Is this film going to set the world on fire, nope. It is just a good old fashioned comedy filled with heart and a great ending. Matt and Mike agree it is not a must see in theaters but it is well worth a watch. Matt awards About My Father 3 out of 5 Reels while Mike awards the movie 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

For our next pod Matt and Mike continue with another summer blockbuster. Probably the most anticipated of the year, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Don’t forget to stay for the end to hear Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #15 where she chats about the new live action Little Mermaid. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #324: Fast X

Hi kiddos and welcome to another RFN podcast. For Episode #324 the summer blockbusters keep on coming with Fast X starring Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jason Mamoa. Not family or car topics today include, is the MCU dead, AI is taking over, and Fast XXX.

Do you love nonsensical action, bad stories, and characters that never really die? Then Fast X is right up your alley! Just like the previous nine films Fast X is over the top action with a really strange plot and characters that are not needed (looking at you Brie Larson). Basically if you like this series up to this point you will love this film. If you are not a fan of Fast and Furious or insane fantasy action then you might as well skip this one. It can be a ton of fun if you know what you are in for before you sit down in your seat. The best part of Fast X is Jason Mamoa’s villain Dante. You can tell he is just really having a ball playing a psycho killer out for revenge. He is so over the top but it really works well.

Mike and Matt both agree this is not a must see film unless you love the Fast and Furious Franchise. Mike awards Fast X 2 out of 5 Reels. Matt just a smidge higher gives it 2.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys change it up a bit with a good old fashioned family comedy, About My Father. Don’t forget to stay for the end to hear Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #14. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #323: Tributary – Ghosted

Hump day is here! For this week’s podcast Matt and Mike chat about a streaming movie! Yes it’s been a while but there wasn’t much released in the theaters so we hit up Apple TV+ to check out Ghosted starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. Extra topics today include cameos, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3  is killing it, and friends in high places.

It’s been a very long time since we just stayed at home and streamed a movie for review. Ghosted was a great pick by Mysterious Mike Talent. It is not too serious, action packed, romantic, and even comedic. The film stars Captain America AKA Chris Evans as a super clingy guy trying to track down a girl he spent only one night with. He quickly finds out that maybe he should have quit while he was a head. Ana de Armas stars as the no nonsense CIA operative whose one night stand tracks her down while trying to save the world.

Ghosted was a lot of fun and had some great action. The special effects at times were very lacking. The brief but hilarious cameos by some big stars just added to the fun. Mike awards Ghosted 3 out of 5 Reels while Matt gives it a 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the summer blockbusters continue to roll with Fast X starring just about every major action star ever! Don’t forget to check out Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #13 at the end of this incredible podcast. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!
