Episode #132: It Chapter Two

Hey kids, clowns, mutants, nerds, or whatever else you might be, welcome to another fantastical podcast review by the Reel Film Nerds (applause).  Today Matt and Mike talk about yet another horror movie, It Chapter Two.  Maybe we should change the name of the pod to the Reel Horror Film Nerds, nah.  Topics today include why are there so many horror films hitting the theaters, HBO’s hit show Barry, and the new season of American Horror Story

It Chapter Two is a decent continuation of the original 2017 film.  It does not really come off as a sequel like most of the films this past summer.  Here is your fair warning now if you really want to enjoy this film please make sure you watch the original It from 2017 before you head out to the theater.  We cannot emphasize this enough. It Chapter Two relies heavily on your understanding of the original.  The casting was just incredible for It Chapter Two.  The adult versions of the kids we grew to love from 2017 was spot on but no one knocked out of the park as well as Bill Hader.  His dramatic and comedic blend of acting really set him apart from the rest of the cast.  The fights, scares, blood, guts, and gore are on a whole new level for this franchise but it still just did not have the impact of the 2017 film.  Mike Talent could not put into words what it was but Matt thinks its the difference of seeing adults go up against Pennywise instead of kids. They both agree this is a must see movie in the theaters.  Mike awards It Chapter Two 3 out of 5 Reels.  Matt also found the film to be just a bit above average giving it 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys will talk about the independent adventure comedy The Peanut Butter Falcon, finally.  If they can squeeze in two reviews next week they are finally going to dive into listener review requests starting with a really fun action film from 1993, Demolition Man.  Thanks for spending a half hour of your day with us especially you new listeners and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #131: Good Boys

Welcome friends to another podcast about movies!  Yes another one….. Anyways today Mysterious Mike and Incredible Matt finally review the coming-of age raunchy comedy Good Boys.  The guys mostly stay on topic until the end of the pod when Mike and Matt really start talking about their childhoods.  Other topics you don’t care about include streaming services are they the next cable companies, drones: reality versus myth, and the Wish Man film.

Good Boys is a fun raunchy comedy that is reminiscent of Superbad blended with American Pie.  There is a lot of heart throughout the film and quite a few laughs too.  The recurring theme that works best, even though it is used over and over is the main characters not understanding adult oriented items and phrases.  It is incredibly funny even though the gag is used way too much. The acting was decent especially Keith L. Williams who plays Lucas a kid who is way too honest and nice.  Overall Good Boys is a fun film but you can wait until this one comes out at RedBox or one of the many streaming services.  Mike Talent enjoyed the film giving it 3 out of 5 Reels.  Matt was a bit harsher than Mike but not by much. Let’s hope this is only a phase.  He gives Good Boys 2.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys will talk about the sequel to the 2017 break out horror hit It Chapter Two.  If they can get two reviews in and Mike has the film in a theater near him they will talk about the independent adventure comedy The Peanut Butter Falcon, if not you will just get It Chapter Two which probably will be over our time limit to begin with.  Thank you faithful listeners for tuning in to another pod, we will chat at you next week.

Episode #130: Ready or Not

Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike what day is it Mike?  HUMP DAY!  Hello fellow nerds and movie buffs and welcome to the continuing saga that is the Reel Film Nerds podcast!  Today Mike (see get the joke reference now?) Talent and Matt review the new horror thriller mystery comedy Ready or Not.  Our way too many bonus topics mostly brought up by Matt include a Gateway to Geekdom recap, death of 20th Century Fox movie productions, and do movie trailers give away too much of the film?

Ready or Not is a fun horror comedy that knows exactly what it is and is not afraid to show it.  Samara Weaving does an incredible job as a bride whose wedding night goes terribly wrong!  She also has one of the best blood curdling screams Matt has heard in a long time.  Mike thought the trailer showed too many pivotal moments of the film. Overall your two hosts really enjoyed the film and agree if you are a horror movie or comedy buff don’t skip this one.  Mr. Talent gives Ready or Not a respectable 3 out of 5 Reels.  Matt on the other hand gives it the rating the film truly deserves a 4 out of 5 Reels.

Next week, yes next week, we are currently on our weekly podcast schedule, Matt and Mike will finally review Good Boys.  If the guys can get two reviews in they are going to start working their way through the many listener requests, since the summer movie season is coming to a close.  The first film picked from the request hat will be 1993’s Demolition Man starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes.  Thanks everybody for tuning in to another pod and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #129: Tributary – Revenger

So we are back on our not regular schedule but we did do some podcasting this week!  Regretfully though Mike Talent slacked off and didn’t make it to the theater so we finally get to do our Tributary review of the South Korean film hosted on Netflix called Revenger.  Can you guess what it’s about, if you said revenge you are right!  Moonlighting topics this week include Josh Brolin, Mike might have revenge issues, and the upcoming Prescott Gateway Mall event Gateway to Geekdom.

Revenger is a great martial arts action film with a forgettable story.  It is not an awful story but it is nothing special. The film starts out with a bang, fizzles a bit, and finishes strong.  The action, oh man the action! The fight scenes and choreography are just incredible! One thing that Mike Talent wasn’t a fan of was how the actors switched between Korean and English in a handful of scenes.  Matt personally thinks it was a mistake that was not caught before the final edit. Mike Talent also was not a big fan of the story in this film and has seen many many revenge films better than this one. He gives Revenger 2 out of 5 Reels.  Matt thought it was just average.  He agrees the story was nothing special but the fight scenes were amazing.  They took him back to the martial arts films he grew up watching. Matt gives the movie 3 out of 5 Reels.

Next week hopefully Mike will go to the movie theater so we can discuss the new Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg produced Good Boys.  If we can get two reviews done the second film that Matt will definitely see and hopefully Mike will too is Ready or Not.  A dark thriller hide and go seek game for a new bride involving her in-laws.  Thanks for tuning in and supporting the show see you at Gateway to Geekdom on Saturday!

Please support our sister podcasts The Bluemilk Podcast and The Mile High Show also based in beautiful Prescott, Arizona. They are way better podcasts than ours. Seriously.
