Episode #322: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Well the time has come. We all knew this day would be here but I think we were all just in denial. For Episode 322 we chat about James Gunn’s last Marvel Cinematic Universe film, as of now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 starring Chris Pratt, Chukwudi Iwuji, Bradley Cooper, and Karen Gillian. Not MCU topics today include golf, DCEU, and the Phoenix Suns.

Let’s not beat around the bush, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is an incredible film. It wraps up some of the most loved films of the MCU to date in a nice tight bow. James Gunn you will be missed sir but we will be looking forward to the work you create at DC. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the complete package. Great acting, fun story, great pacing, lots of humor, honestly there isn’t much missing from this film. Seriously, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the best MCU film since Spider-Man No Way Home and that’s a bold statement.

Mike, Matt and Ma agree you must see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the theater. It is a great kickoff to the summer blockbuster season. This film is made to be seen on the biggest baddest screen available. Mike and Ma without hesitation give Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 a perfect score of 5 out of 5 Reels and Cookies. Matt on the other hand thinks not everyone can see this film, especially people who are sensitive to animal harm. He awards the film a near perfect score of 4.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week there isn’t much hitting the theaters thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 so Mike, Matt, and Ma hit the streaming services to check out Ghosted starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. Don’t forget to check out Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #12 at the end of this incredible podcast. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #319: Renfield

Here we are again, it’s like Mike and Matt do these things every week. For this week’s pod Matt and Mike, and Ma Hinshaw and Matt, chat about the latest Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult film Renfield. Not Dracula topics include Moviepass is getting better, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and putting kids to work.

Dracula has been a horror icon for generations and Renfield finally gives Nicolas Cage his chance at playing the mythical creature, and he kills it. Renfield is like two films smashed into one. You have the story of Renfield, Dracula’s familiar, and his struggles to confront his narcissistic boss and grow as a person. Then you have the story of a cop trying to live up to her father’s reputation and take down a large crime family while combating cop corruption. They are both great stories but are smashed together to create an odd script for Renfield

The acting is fantastic and not just from Nic Cage but also Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, and Ben Schwartz. The sets are colorful and creative, but the action and gore is where this film really shines. It’s just so much fun and over the top it reminds you of a video game. Matt and Mike both agree Renfield is a blast and worth a watch in the theaters. They both award the film 3 out of 5 Reels.

Next week we check out the new release Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim. Don’t forget to check out Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #9 at the end of RFN Episode #319. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #317: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Happy new podcast day! For Reel Film Nerds Podcast #317 Matt and Mike chat about a movie based on a classic RPG Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez. Not misunderstood board game topics include Bones, cats, and allergies.

What a really nice spring surprise. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a really fun movie with a great story, great acting, decent CGI, and surprisingly great humor. D&D is not a monster movie, it is a creature movie. There are lots of fun animals, dragons, and mythical creatures throughout the film. D&D does not try to take itself too seriously. What I mean by that is this, the movie does not try to tell you what to think. It does not try to make you experience an emotional or analytical revelation. It is just a movie with a great adventure, story, and characters. It’s exactly the kind of movie that we are really missing today.

No, D&D is not going to win any awards. It’s not going to have you talking about it with your friends two weeks later. It’s just a really fun time. Mike and Matt think this is a must see film in the theaters. Mike awards Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 4 out of 5 Reels while Matt gives it 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week we check out the new release Air starring Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, and Ben Affleck. Don’t forget to check out Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #7 at the end of RFN Episode #317. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #315: Tributary – RRR

Wow, March is moving by quickly! This week Mike, Matt, and Ma Hinshaw chat about a recent Academy Award winning film RRR currently streaming on Netflix. Additional topics include Happy Birthday Mike, the British Empire was ruthless, and to dub or not to dub.

Matt has been wanting to watch this film since he found out about late last summer. He just wanted to wait to review it with Mike for this pod and man he was not disappointed. RRR is an incredible film! Excellent story, amazing action, and very very good acting. RRR is extremely loosely based on real revolutionaries and real events but it is a fictional retelling, almost a What If type story.

The stunts and action are some of the best we have ever seen. Yes they are very unrealistic at times and down right over the top but man are they cool to watch. The cinematography was excellent. It’s lit so perfectly and shot so well that it’s almost distracting. Mike, Ma, and Matt all agree RRR is a must see film!

Mike with the highest rating gives RRR 4.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt and Ma on the other hand both award it 4 out of 5 Reels and Oatmeal cookies.

For next week’s pod we head to theaters to catch Keanu Reeves latest installment of the infamous John Wick series, John Wick: Chapter 4!! Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #269: The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

May the Fourth be with you! Yes it’s that time of year again for the fake national Star Wars day. Listen to the pod, Matt explains. Today the guys discuss the latest Nicolas Cage movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Bonus Sith topics include IPA addicts, Top Gun Maverick is coming, and The Rock for President.

Have you ever wanted to see the most Nicolas Cage movie Nicolas Cage has ever made, yes? Then  The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a not miss film. This meta comedy stars Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage channeling his many roles over the years. Cage is hired by a rich superfan, Javi played by Pedro Pascal, to attend his birthday party. The film quickly turns into its own action thriller as the CIA and drug lords get involved.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a really fun adventure that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Pedro Pascal and Nicolas Cage have excellent chemistry and clearly had a blast filming this movie. Is this flick for everyone, no, but it is well worth a watch especially fans of action, comedy, and Nick Cage. Mike and Matt both agree  The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent earns a respectable 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
