Episode #319: Renfield

Here we are again, it’s like Mike and Matt do these things every week. For this week’s pod Matt and Mike, and Ma Hinshaw and Matt, chat about the latest Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult film Renfield. Not Dracula topics include Moviepass is getting better, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and putting kids to work.

Dracula has been a horror icon for generations and Renfield finally gives Nicolas Cage his chance at playing the mythical creature, and he kills it. Renfield is like two films smashed into one. You have the story of Renfield, Dracula’s familiar, and his struggles to confront his narcissistic boss and grow as a person. Then you have the story of a cop trying to live up to her father’s reputation and take down a large crime family while combating cop corruption. They are both great stories but are smashed together to create an odd script for Renfield

The acting is fantastic and not just from Nic Cage but also Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, and Ben Schwartz. The sets are colorful and creative, but the action and gore is where this film really shines. It’s just so much fun and over the top it reminds you of a video game. Matt and Mike both agree Renfield is a blast and worth a watch in the theaters. They both award the film 3 out of 5 Reels.

Next week we check out the new release Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim. Don’t forget to check out Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #9 at the end of RFN Episode #319. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #310: Knock at the Cabin

Happy Valentine’s Day hangover, may your wallets be empty and your hearts be full of love. Today for Reel Film Nerds Episode 310 the guys review Knock at the Cabin while celebrating their 5 year anniversary! Topics today include Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode 1, what a twist, and should we review RRR.

Apocalypse stories are a dime a dozen by movie standards. Knock at the Cabin is another apocalypse story but it doesn’t blatantly show you what’s going on outside the cabin. It hints at it and shows you news reports. Knock at the Cabin is a lot more like a one room play focusing on acting and character development and it does great. Besides the incredible acting by the entire cast especially Kristen Cui and Dave Bautista the cinematography is a master class. It is just incredible. Shot entirely on film using tight shots, wide shots, etc. it really elevates this film.

Mike liked Knock at the Cabin but didn’t love it. He awards the film 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt and Ma Hinshaw on the other hand loved it. They both give the film 4 out of 5 Reels.

Next week Mike, Matt, and Ma head to the theaters to watch our first MCU film of 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania starring Paul Rudd and Jonathan Majors. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #241: Harvest Horror Fest – The Strangers

It’s finally here kids, Mike’s favorite time of year, the annual Harvest Horror Fest! For his first pick of horror Mike went with a newer classic The Strangers starring Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler. Not horror related topics include old cell phones, the new Venom flick, and street lights.

The Strangers is a great psychological horror film with minimal sets and cast allowing the story to really drive the film. There are a ton of jump scares that Matt is not a big fan of. He thinks they are a cop out when it comes to horror. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman did an excellent job keeping the viewers on their toes. When things start to go awry Tyler has an absolute blood curdling scream! This is a great start to our annual celebration of horror films. If you have not seen The Strangers and are into horror even a little bit this is a must see. Mike loves this film, still creeping him out to this day. He awards it 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt also enjoyed the movie being his first viewing of it. He is a bit harsher but still awards a decent rating with 3 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the horror continues with kind of Matt’s pick, the 2001 haunted house thriller Thir13en Ghosts starring Shannon Elizabeth and Matthew Lillard. It is currently streaming on HBO Max if you want to watch it with us. Thank you for your continued support of our podcast and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #194: Harvest Horror Fest – Candyman (1992)

We saved the best for last for our Third Annual Harvest Horror Fest, Candyman (1992) starring Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen. Additional topics include the importance of movie soundtracks, urban legends, and discovering old photographs.

Neither of your hosts have seen this film in a very long time and it caught them off guard. Candyman (1992) is a great movie that has stood the test of time. The story, based on the “The Forbidden,” by Clive Barker is fantastic. It is dark, rooted in history, and really makes the viewer think. Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen, who play our main characters, do a fantastic job bringing fear and curiosity to their roles. The kill scenes are particularly unique in this film. They do not show the act but rather the aftermath. It really helps make the movie even more frightening. Mike and Matt both really enjoyed their re-watch of Candyman (1992) and agree everyone should see it.

Mike continues his streak of higher than normal ratings giving the film 4.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt just a smidge lower, awards Candyman (1992) 4 out of 5 Reels. Hopefully Jordan Peele will keep true to the original with his Candyman (2021) expected for release in August 2021.

Next week instead of getting all political we are going to watch a fun Netflix Original comedy Hubie Halloween starring Adam Sandler and Julie Bowen. Don’t forget to enter our contest to win a copy of the brand new film Spell (2020) from Paramount Pictures. Thanks for your support and we will chat at you next week!

Episode #193: Harvest Horror Fest – The Lost Boys (1987)

Our Third Annual Harvest Horror Fest continues with a true vampire horror comedy classic The Lost Boys (1987) starring Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, and the two Coreys. Off topics include Taken, RAW vs JPEG, and Natalie Portman.

This is it, arguably the original teen vampire film, The Lost Boys (1987). Basically it’s Matt and Mike’s version of the Twilight saga or Vampire Academy except this movie is great. It is a fun dark action packed horror comedy that is shot well and acted well. Diane Wiest just won her second Academy Award the year before! The story is creative with unique characters. It has everything, even an extremely ripped dude playing a sax. The Lost Boys (1987) is a cult classic that needs no explanation why. It’s just a really great fun film. Everyone should experience this flick in their lives. Mike awards the movie 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt, back to beating Mikes ratings, gives The Lost Boys (1987) 4.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next Wednesday, we are sorry to say, is our final installment of Third Annual Harvest Horror Fest with one of Mike’s picks Candyman (1992). If you have regular TV, we know you don’t, but if you do it is playing on the SyFy channel this month. Lastly don’t forget to enter our contest to win a copy of the brand new film Love and Monsters. We will chat at you next week!
