Episode #141: Harvest Horror Fest – Killer Klowns from Outer Space

Happy Birthday Matt and happy Thursday to everyone else!  Don’t be sad but our Second Annual Harvest Horror Fest is coming to a close but not yet!  This week we have an incredible classic horror B-movie, Killer Klowns from Outer Space!  Not klown related topics include pizza parties, HBO’s new Watchmen show, and Bozo the Clown.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space is a fun horror film that knows exactly what it is and capitalizes on it.  The acting is cheesy, the premise is cheesy, and the sets are cheesy but that is what makes this movie so much fun!  The Klowns are particularly terrifying especially their face/masks. The level of detail and movement that went into them is astounding for 1988.  The real genius of the movie though really shines through in the different sets, weapons, and tools the alien Klowns use from cotton candy cocoons to popcorn guns.  Killer Klowns from Outer Space really hits all the marks for a great, fun, and unique horror film.  Mike Talent, Mr. Horror movie himself, has never seen this film until now and he loved it!  He gives it 4.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt also really enjoys Killer Klowns from Outer Space that is why he pushed Mike to have it in this year’s HHF.  He gives the movie a solid score of 3 out of 5 Reels.

For next week, the guys are still trying to figure out what to watch and review.  Maybe a streaming movie or something in the theaters that is off the beaten path or maybe they will do two Harvest Horror Fest films. Tune in Monday to Magic 99.1 with Leza Live to find out what they settle on before the podcast drops on Tuesday.  Have a great weekend everyone and thanks for hanging out and listening to us, we will chat at you next week.

Episode #140: Zombieland: Double Tap

Welcome listeners both new and old to another fantastical movie review by your loud mouth buddies Mike Talent and Matt Hinshaw.  Today the dismal dynamic duo discuss a sequel 10 years in the making Zombieland: Double Tap.  Not zombie related topics include Jones Soda, Mike’s criminal history, and double features.

Zombieland: Double Tap is a fun sequel to a groundbreaking horror comedy that took way too long to come out.  It’s amazing they were able to get the main cast members to reprise their roles after such a long period of time.  Especially since most of them have moved on to bigger and better films winning all kinds of awards to boot! Zomibeland: Double Tap does nothing new to add to the zombie genre or Zombieland world and that is ok.  We get a handful of new characters and places with some of the same old tropes of the previous film.  There are some really fun scenes and really annoying characters that make this just a fun film to enjoy with friends and family.  Is it going to win any awards and jump start a whole new zombie craze, nope but it was a great time with a great story and great actors what more do you want out of a zombie film?  Mysterious Mike Talent loved Zombieland: Double Tap giving it an amazing score with 4 out of 5 Reels.  Matt also really enjoyed the film but thought it did nothing new.  There were a lot of fun scenes, great acting, and immersive sets but he felt that the movie could have gone farther.  He gives it a 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Thursday Harvest Horror fest starts winding down as we review slapstick horror comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space.  Can you believe self proclaimed horror fanatic Mike Talent has never seen it?  Neither can we! If you want to watch it before our review it is streaming right now on Amazon Prime Video.  Thanks for hanging out and listening to us, we will chat at you on Thursday.

Episode #139: Harvest Horror Fest – Children of the Corn (1984)

Happy Thursday everyone, hang in there the week is almost over.  in the meantime let the horror continue and not just the podcast but the movies we review too!  For our second Harvest Horror Fest review of the season Matt and Mike discuss the 1984 Stephen King classic Children of the Corn.  Extra special topics include The Terminator, South Park, and the streaming wars are really heating up.

Children of the Corn is a decent movie today but it is not as scary as your hosts’ thought.  The acting is passable and the script is pretty good but it just does not come off as scary unless you are like Matt and never plan on breeding then all those children are terrifying.  The atmosphere of an empty town in the middle of nowhere is captured very well. The special effects well let’s just say it was the early 80’s and they did the best they could with what they had.  It’s also difficult to watch Linda Hamilton play the victim when in the very same year she battled the first Terminator and won.  Mike the horror lover that he is was not super impressed with this classic.  He gives the film 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt thought Children of the Corn was just average.  There were some things that could have been better but overall it’s a passable movie.  He gives it 3 out of 5 Reels.

Next week we are doubling down on horror movies, kinda.  Zombieland: Double Tap comes out this weekend and both your hosts are very excited to watch the follow up to the 2009 smash hit horror comedy.  Thursday our Harvest Horror Fest continues with yet another classic horror film, well maybe a cult classic, Killer Klowns from Outer Space.  It is streaming right now on Amazon Prime Video if you want to watch it before next Thursday.  Thanks for listening and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #132: It Chapter Two

Hey kids, clowns, mutants, nerds, or whatever else you might be, welcome to another fantastical podcast review by the Reel Film Nerds (applause).  Today Matt and Mike talk about yet another horror movie, It Chapter Two.  Maybe we should change the name of the pod to the Reel Horror Film Nerds, nah.  Topics today include why are there so many horror films hitting the theaters, HBO’s hit show Barry, and the new season of American Horror Story

It Chapter Two is a decent continuation of the original 2017 film.  It does not really come off as a sequel like most of the films this past summer.  Here is your fair warning now if you really want to enjoy this film please make sure you watch the original It from 2017 before you head out to the theater.  We cannot emphasize this enough. It Chapter Two relies heavily on your understanding of the original.  The casting was just incredible for It Chapter Two.  The adult versions of the kids we grew to love from 2017 was spot on but no one knocked out of the park as well as Bill Hader.  His dramatic and comedic blend of acting really set him apart from the rest of the cast.  The fights, scares, blood, guts, and gore are on a whole new level for this franchise but it still just did not have the impact of the 2017 film.  Mike Talent could not put into words what it was but Matt thinks its the difference of seeing adults go up against Pennywise instead of kids. They both agree this is a must see movie in the theaters.  Mike awards It Chapter Two 3 out of 5 Reels.  Matt also found the film to be just a bit above average giving it 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys will talk about the independent adventure comedy The Peanut Butter Falcon, finally.  If they can squeeze in two reviews next week they are finally going to dive into listener review requests starting with a really fun action film from 1993, Demolition Man.  Thanks for spending a half hour of your day with us especially you new listeners and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #130: Ready or Not

Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike what day is it Mike?  HUMP DAY!  Hello fellow nerds and movie buffs and welcome to the continuing saga that is the Reel Film Nerds podcast!  Today Mike (see get the joke reference now?) Talent and Matt review the new horror thriller mystery comedy Ready or Not.  Our way too many bonus topics mostly brought up by Matt include a Gateway to Geekdom recap, death of 20th Century Fox movie productions, and do movie trailers give away too much of the film?

Ready or Not is a fun horror comedy that knows exactly what it is and is not afraid to show it.  Samara Weaving does an incredible job as a bride whose wedding night goes terribly wrong!  She also has one of the best blood curdling screams Matt has heard in a long time.  Mike thought the trailer showed too many pivotal moments of the film. Overall your two hosts really enjoyed the film and agree if you are a horror movie or comedy buff don’t skip this one.  Mr. Talent gives Ready or Not a respectable 3 out of 5 Reels.  Matt on the other hand gives it the rating the film truly deserves a 4 out of 5 Reels.

Next week, yes next week, we are currently on our weekly podcast schedule, Matt and Mike will finally review Good Boys.  If the guys can get two reviews in they are going to start working their way through the many listener requests, since the summer movie season is coming to a close.  The first film picked from the request hat will be 1993’s Demolition Man starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes.  Thanks everybody for tuning in to another pod and we will chat at you next week.
