Episode #315: Tributary – RRR

Wow, March is moving by quickly! This week Mike, Matt, and Ma Hinshaw chat about a recent Academy Award winning film RRR currently streaming on Netflix. Additional topics include Happy Birthday Mike, the British Empire was ruthless, and to dub or not to dub.

Matt has been wanting to watch this film since he found out about late last summer. He just wanted to wait to review it with Mike for this pod and man he was not disappointed. RRR is an incredible film! Excellent story, amazing action, and very very good acting. RRR is extremely loosely based on real revolutionaries and real events but it is a fictional retelling, almost a What If type story.

The stunts and action are some of the best we have ever seen. Yes they are very unrealistic at times and down right over the top but man are they cool to watch. The cinematography was excellent. It’s lit so perfectly and shot so well that it’s almost distracting. Mike, Ma, and Matt all agree RRR is a must see film!

Mike with the highest rating gives RRR 4.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt and Ma on the other hand both award it 4 out of 5 Reels and Oatmeal cookies.

For next week’s pod we head to theaters to catch Keanu Reeves latest installment of the infamous John Wick series, John Wick: Chapter 4!! Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #314: 65

Happy almost St. Patrick’s Day everyone! For Episode 314 Mike and Matt chat about a little film that hit the box office last week starring Adam Driver, 65. Additional topics today include The 2023 Academy Awards, Flying Basset, and one incredible giveaway.

When it comes to film with dinosaurs the bar has been set pretty high but also pretty low. 65 is a decent film that falls in the middle of dinosaur films. The CGI is pretty good, the acting by Adam Driver and Ariana Greenblatt is very good, but what falls flat is the story. It’s not a horrible story but it just doesn’t have a ton of substance or dialogue. Because of this the world building is very lacking as well. There is little to no character development so this ancient journey dodging being eaten every few minutes really doesn’t have a ton of weight to it because you don’t really care about the two main characters. 65 is not a bad film, it’s just not a great film like Jurassic Park. Mike and Matt agree 65 only earns a mediocre score of 2 out of 5 Reels.

For next week’s episode Mike wanted to stay home from the theaters. He picked an Indian film that just won an Academy Award this week, RRR. It is currently streaming on Netflix so why not watch it with us? Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #312: Cocaine Bear

Welcome to March everyone. Can you believe how fast this year has rocketed by? For today’s pod Mike, Matt, and Ma Hinshaw chat about a film that is tearing up the box office Cocaine Bear directed by Elizabeth Banks. Not drug related animal topics include 8K, Movie Pass sucks again, and a new incredible Blu-ray giveaway.

This movie is exactly what we wanted, just not enough of it. Cocaine Bear is a high dollar B-movie with A-list stars and an amazing CGI bear. The biggest problem with this film is they did not push the boundaries harder. There are some really great over the top scenes and humor but they are too few and far between. Another big issue is the amount of stories in this film. There are a ton of characters, which is great, but they all have these pretty intricate stories. Why, why are there so many? A handful at best but better developed really would improve this film.

Matt and Mike both agree this is a wait until it’s streaming kinda movie. It is a ton of fun and if you want to go to the theaters please do but it’s not a must see film. Mike awards Cocaine Bear 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt is just a smidge lower with 2 out of 5 Reels. Of course we can’t forget Ma Hinshaw who just loves pretty much anything, she awards the movie 3.5 out of 5 cookies.

Next week Mike, Matt, and even Ma continue their theater going run with Guy Ritchie’s latest film Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre starring Jason Statham. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #308: Tributary – The Pale Blue Eye

Welcome to February everyone. This year is just rocketing by isn’t it? This week Mike and Matt sit down to chat about the Netflix Original The Pale Blue Eye starring Christian Bale and Harry Melling. Not murder mystery topics include Australia, cursive, and anxious Mike.

If you enjoy murder mysteries, period films, or amazing acting then The Pale Blue Eye is a great film for you. For the rest of you listeners you can stop reading now. A mysterious hanging of a West Point cadet in 1830 prompts the school’s director to recruit a local detective to investigate the mysterious suicide.  The costumes are amazing, the sets are beautiful, and the color palette is perfect. Christian Bale never disappoints either. He is an incredible actor and one of the best things about this film. Harry Melling portrays a young Edgar Allen Poe nearly stealing the show from Bale

Matt and Mike differ greatly on this film. Mike really enjoyed The Pale Blue Eye. He loved almost every aspect of it, awarding the film 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt on the other hand really found the story boring and way too long. He only awards it 2 out of 5 Reels.

Next week Mike and Matt play catch up by reviewing one of the 2023 Oscar Nominated Best Picture films The Fabelmans written and directed by Steven Spielberg. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #272: Legacy – Top Gun

Do you have a need, a need for speed? Well then we have a podcast for you! Today in preparation for the new Top Gun Maverick, Matt and Mike sit down and chat about the 1986 original Top Gun. Starring Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Kelly McGillis. Not air combat training topics include call signs, new Top Gun school, and global politics in movies.

What can we say about the 1980’s naval aviator classic that hasn’t been said before, not much as we found out in the pod. Top Gun is an amazing movie! Yes it shows its age but in your host’s opinions it holds up well. Top Gun was shot well, acted well, had a great story, and even won an Oscar for best original song! Right now is a great time to re-watch this classic with your kids, friends, or loved ones before the sequel drops on Friday. Mike and Matt both agree Top Gun is a 5 Reel film all the way! It is a must watch piece of cinematic history especially if you are a fan of flying or beach volleyball.

For next week’s podcast Mike and Matt head to the theaters to finally watch Top Gun Maverick starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer. It was only supposed to be released in 2019 after all. Not that Matt’s anxious or anything, HA! Thanks for listening and reading to the end of our show notes. Chat at you next week!
