Episode #167: The Rhythm Section

Is it just us or are the days starting to really blend together?  Well at least today is going to be different, we have a brand spanking new episode of the Reel Film Nerds podcast for you!  In this pod Mike and Matt talk revenge, spies, and the Green Lantern? when they review The Rhythm Section starring Blake Lively and Jude Law.  Way off topics include Shudder, buying a new TV, and washing dishes.

The Rhythm Section is a great film with lots of twists and turns and excellent acting.  Blake Lively especially excels at the many different ways her character is portrayed from girl next door to junkie to badass assassin.  Jude Law also does an excellent job being the strong willed and almost hated former spy training Lively’s character and taking advantage of her naivety.  One incredible scene of the film really sticks out to your two hosts, a car chase.  It is your typical car chase but the way it was shot puts you in the passenger seat for the whole chase.  There are no overhead shots or scene setting exteriors, just a fun ride with a scared Lively trying to escape.  Matt and Mike are on a roll!  Again they agree on a rating both awarding The Rhythm Section 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Congratulations to our winner’s and enjoy your copy of The Rhythm Section while practicing social distancing.  Special thanks goes out to Paramount Pictures for supplying us with digital codes to share with you our loyal listeners.  For everyone who entered our contest thank you for your support.  Next week Mike and Matt talk about a new Netflix Original Sci-Fi film Code 8.  Thanks for downloading our pod and help spread the love by telling your friends and family to listen too!  We will chat at you next week.

Episode #157: Parasite

Happy Wednesday fellow nerds!  Matt and Mike are back with another great podcast for you.  Today the guys review a film that slid under the radar this past November but is currently in the theaters and on Blu-ray thanks to its many Academy Award nominations, the South Korean film Parasite.  Bonus topics today include Aerosmith, subtitles, and Morse code.

Parasite is a very good film that caught both of your hosts by surprise.  It is 100% subtitled so if you are not ok with reading for an entire film you might want to skip this one.  You will really be missing out on a great movie though. The acting, sets, and the cinematography are fantastic in Parasite but where this film really shines is its story.  It is very hard to discuss this film without spoiling it so we won’t here.  It is a genre bending film that raises lots of questions about societal class status.  You will be thinking and discussing Parasite long after you leave the movie theater.  Mike really enjoyed this film giving it 4 out of 5 Reels.  Matt on the other hand was absolutely blown away by Parasite, he gives it a perfect rating with 5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys head to their favorite theaters to watch DC’s latest superhero film featuring a stellar cast, Birds of Prey.  The real question is if this film will continue DC’s recent success with films like Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam! or is it going to be a box office disaster like Justice League?  Sorry but you will have to wait to download next week’s pod to find out.  Chat with you then.

Episode #153: Uncut Gems

Welcome to 2020 everyone!  Nope we are not going to make the same stupid joke everyone else keeps making on the socials about finally having 2020 vision but we are going to review a movie for you!  Today your hosts talk about the Safdie brother’s newest film Uncut Gems starring Adam Sandler.  Bonus topics today include going to concerts, great TV shows, and advancing film making with smaller budget films.

Uncut Gems is a dark disturbing and well made film.  It is gritty to it’s core from the sets to the audio tracks to the chaotic cinematography.  Adam Sandler is absolutely incredible as main protagonist Howard Ratner.  Easily the best performance of his life. If Sandler is not at least nominated for an Academy Award for this film Matt might start a one man riot.  Kevin Garnett yes that Kevin Garnett does a surprisingly great job as himself as an obsessed NBA basketball player looking for anything to give him an edge.  Uncut Gems is a great film but it is not a must see in the theaters unless you have seen Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker four times like Matt has then sure why not.  This film has tons of awards potential and both your hosts really enjoyed it.  Mike Talent with the surprise highest rating of the pod gives the film 4 out of 5 Reels.  Matt gave it a good rating as well just not at Mike’s level. He gives Uncut Gems 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the guys stay home and watch a couple of new Netflix films.  The first one is Michael Bay’s most Michael Bay film to date according to it’s trailers, 6 Underground starring none other than the living embodiment of the merc with a mouth Ryan Reynolds.  Our second Tributary review if we can get to it is another Netflix Original based on a true story, The Two Popes starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce.  Thanks for hanging out with us for another incredible year of movie reviews with even more to come in 2020!  Chat at you next week.

Episode #147: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Happy Thanksgiving Eve everyone!  Are you ready to get your grub on?  Some families have a tradition of seeing movies on Thanksgiving.  Mike and Matt are here to help you decide if you should see the new Tom Hanks film inspired by one of the most loved Americans to walk the face of the earth, Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.  Additional topics today include Apple products, The Mandalorian (yes again), and Tom Hanks’ comedic roles.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a great film it was just not the film we were promised in the trailers.  The story is really good but it is not a story about Fred Rogers.  It involves Mr. Rogers in a big way but he is not the focus of the film.  It is loosely based on Esquire magazine journalist Tom Junod’s article and friendship with Fred.  The film is very emotional especially if you grew up watching Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.  It pulls all the right strings especially the main character Lloyd Vodel’s relationship with his family or lack thereof.  Mike and Matt both agree this is a great film but it is not worth going to the theaters to watch. Wait until it comes out to rent or to stream.  Mike gives A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood an average rating of 3 out of 5 Reels, Matt is just a smidge higher with 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

The theaters are pretty dry for new releases over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend which is very strange.  So for next week your hosts will be doing a Tributary review on Martin Scorsese’s straight to Netflix film The Irishman starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci.  Have a great holiday weekend and don’t trample anyone trying to score killer Black Friday deals on your favorite films, electronics, or other goodies.  Thanks for hanging out with us and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #146: Ford v Ferrari

Welcome to Wednesday everyone!  The week is halfway over and your host’s Mike and Matt are here to help by chatting about an incredible film!  Today the guys review James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon.  Bonus topics today include Gallup New Mexico, The Mandalorian, and Adam Carolla’s The 24 Hour War.

Ford V Ferrari is truly an amazing film.  This true story is exciting and intricate, the acting is incredible especially Bale and Damon’s chemistry, and the cinematography is down right gorgeous. This film is not only for car lovers it is for everyone.  Yes cars are the focus of the film but honestly it’s about relationships, working hard, and family. Matt and Mike both agree this is a must see in the theater.  The visuals paired with the incredible sound mixing really deserves to be experienced in the best way possible. Matt really liked Ford v Ferrari, he gives it 4 out of 5 Reels.  Mike also really enjoyed the movie but as expected he is a bit harsher than Matt awarding the film 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week Tom Hanks returns to the big screen to portray one of the most loved and respected men in America Fred Rogers in the film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.  If you have not checked it out yet make sure you watch 2018’s documentary on Mr. Rogers titled Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
