Episode #316: John Wick: Chapter 4

Happy hump day everyone! It’s here, woo-hoo, John Wick: Chapter 4 and man it did not disappoint. Bonus topics today include Dolby Atmos, Dodge Challenger Demon, and Matt and Ma are back on the radio!

It’s been just about 4 years since John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and man a lot has changed in our world. Matt and Mike are just so happy that John Wick didn’t. John Wick: Chapter 4 is an incredible film. The stunts are always at the top but this chapter they really added in martial arts. The John Wick series has always had a level of martial arts but not like this. A lot of that has to do with new co-star Donnie Yen. What an incredible actor and martial artist. He really helped elevate an already incredible franchise. Keanu Reeves, as always, was incredible. He has really upped his hand to hand combat to try to keep up with Yen and we think he did a great job.

If John Wick: Chapter 4 is the final main film in this franchise your hosts would be satisfied. It has a very good story, amazing action, great characters, incredible acting, and even some really fun humor. Matt and Mike both agree this is a must see film in the theaters. They both award John Wick: Chapter 4, 4.5 out of 5 Reels.

For next week’s pod we continue with the new theater releases with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #314: 65

Happy almost St. Patrick’s Day everyone! For Episode 314 Mike and Matt chat about a little film that hit the box office last week starring Adam Driver, 65. Additional topics today include The 2023 Academy Awards, Flying Basset, and one incredible giveaway.

When it comes to film with dinosaurs the bar has been set pretty high but also pretty low. 65 is a decent film that falls in the middle of dinosaur films. The CGI is pretty good, the acting by Adam Driver and Ariana Greenblatt is very good, but what falls flat is the story. It’s not a horrible story but it just doesn’t have a ton of substance or dialogue. Because of this the world building is very lacking as well. There is little to no character development so this ancient journey dodging being eaten every few minutes really doesn’t have a ton of weight to it because you don’t really care about the two main characters. 65 is not a bad film, it’s just not a great film like Jurassic Park. Mike and Matt agree 65 only earns a mediocre score of 2 out of 5 Reels.

For next week’s episode Mike wanted to stay home from the theaters. He picked an Indian film that just won an Academy Award this week, RRR. It is currently streaming on Netflix so why not watch it with us? Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #310: Knock at the Cabin

Happy Valentine’s Day hangover, may your wallets be empty and your hearts be full of love. Today for Reel Film Nerds Episode 310 the guys review Knock at the Cabin while celebrating their 5 year anniversary! Topics today include Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode 1, what a twist, and should we review RRR.

Apocalypse stories are a dime a dozen by movie standards. Knock at the Cabin is another apocalypse story but it doesn’t blatantly show you what’s going on outside the cabin. It hints at it and shows you news reports. Knock at the Cabin is a lot more like a one room play focusing on acting and character development and it does great. Besides the incredible acting by the entire cast especially Kristen Cui and Dave Bautista the cinematography is a master class. It is just incredible. Shot entirely on film using tight shots, wide shots, etc. it really elevates this film.

Mike liked Knock at the Cabin but didn’t love it. He awards the film 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt and Ma Hinshaw on the other hand loved it. They both give the film 4 out of 5 Reels.

Next week Mike, Matt, and Ma head to the theaters to watch our first MCU film of 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania starring Paul Rudd and Jonathan Majors. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #268: Everything Everywhere All at Once

The month of April is quickly coming to a close and we are ending it with a bang. Today Matt and Mike discuss the sleeper Sci-Fi multiverse hit, Everything Everywhere All at Once. Not multiverse topics include potty training, generation gaps, and David Carradine.

I am going to keep this one quick because it’s late and I don’t want to spoil too much of the pod or the film. Everything Everywhere All at Once is a very special film. It is creative, original, artistic, and has fantastic acting. This film is the complete package. The only issue with this movie is that it’s not for everyone. Older generations, at least Ma Hinshaw, had a difficult time understanding the multiverse and how the story worked. Sometimes these amazing Sci-Fi films can be too far out there and mind bending for viewers. Don’t let that scare you off from one heck of an interesting, zany, and fun ride.

Mike and Matt both agree Everything Everywhere All at Once is a must watch film. Mike awards it a rare perfect rating of 5 out of 5 Reels. Matt drops it half a Reel because the film isn’t for everyone giving it 4.5 out of 5 Reels.

For next week’s podcast Matt continues our theater adventures with the latest Nicolas Cage movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Thanks for listening and reading to the end of our show notes. Chat at you next week!

Episode #197: Tributary – The Vast of Night

Welcome fellow movie buffs to another installment of the Reel Film Nerds podcast! Does anyone actually read this, I hope so. Today Mike and Matt chat about a very low budget but amazing Sci-Fi film The Vast of Night. Offbeat topics include rez ball, Roswell, and no MCU tie-in?

This is a prime example of being able to do a lot with very little. Is The Vast of Night a perfect film, nope but it is a very good film. The writing is superb, the acting is very well done, and the costumes and sets are incredibly accurate. If you love Sci-Fi especially The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, or The X-Files then you will really enjoy this one. It is a tribute to these shows in theme and scope. Mike with the rare high rating loved The Vast of Night giving it 4.5 out of 5 Reels. He wishes more people would embrace smaller independent films. Matt also really enjoyed this movie but not at Mike’s level. He gives it a good score with 3 out of 5 Reels.
