Episode #197: Tributary – The Vast of Night

Welcome fellow movie buffs to another installment of the Reel Film Nerds podcast! Does anyone actually read this, I hope so. Today Mike and Matt chat about a very low budget but amazing Sci-Fi film The Vast of Night. Offbeat topics include rez ball, Roswell, and no MCU tie-in?

This is a prime example of being able to do a lot with very little. Is The Vast of Night a perfect film, nope but it is a very good film. The writing is superb, the acting is very well done, and the costumes and sets are incredibly accurate. If you love Sci-Fi especially The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, or The X-Files then you will really enjoy this one. It is a tribute to these shows in theme and scope. Mike with the rare high rating loved The Vast of Night giving it 4.5 out of 5 Reels. He wishes more people would embrace smaller independent films. Matt also really enjoyed this movie but not at Mike’s level. He gives it a good score with 3 out of 5 Reels.

We are taking next week off for Thanksgiving! It has been a very long time since the guys have had a break and they have earned one. Episode #143: Harvest Horror Fest – The Thing (1982)

Happy Halloween everyone!!! Today is a happy and sad day. First off it’s Halloween, one of the most fun days of the year. Second, it is the final Harvest Horror Fest review of the season. Today Mike Talent and No Talent Matt review John Carpenter’s classic horror film The Thing (1982). Not thing related topics include Tool destroys at Gila River Arena, RC plane flying, and Netflix VS. movie theaters.

The Thing (1982) is an incredible Sci-Fi horror film that Matt should have watched long before 2019 but he is a giant slacker, literally giant. The story is amazing especially the paranoia that slowly ramps us throughout the movie. It rivals the incredible monster and creature design. Speaking of creatures, wow, just wow! They are truly out of this world, especially when you realize this film was made over 35 years ago! Kurt Russell does a particularly excellent job as a helicopter pilot, especially his decision to rock that incredible prospector hat. Our Second Annual Harvest Horror fest has been one for the books especially for Mike Talent. He hands out another almost perfect rating for The Thing (1982) with 4.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt also really enjoyed this movie awarding it 4 out of 5 Reels.

Next week we attempt to return to our regularly scheduled movie reviewing. Who are we kidding we are not regular at all but you will get at least one review maybe two if Mike has time. Our first and maybe only pod is a movie that is advertised as a return to form, Terminator: Dark Fate. We will see and let you know if Linda Hamilton and James Cameron breathe life back into this formerly incredible franchise. Episode #134: Ad Astra

It’s Wednesday and that means it’s new podcast day! Today Mike and Matt review the latest Brad Pitt space odyssey Ad Astra written and directed by James Gray. Incredible additional topics today include The Martian, space pirates, and Matt has a guest spot on Leza Live every Monday on a real radio station Magic 99.1, seriously?

Ad Astra is what we call a true hardcore sci-fi film. It is jam packed with action, it can drag at times, but the cinematography and acting is incredible! For the most part it is a pretty great movie with a decent story about an astronaut with daddy issues but not according to Mike Talent. There are several, and we mean several parts of the film where you have to suspend reality. Both your hosts agree though Brad Pitt‘s acting was nuanced and incredible. Clearly 2019 is Brad Pitt’s year for great acting. Liv Tyler did great and so did Donald Southerland and Tommy Lee Jones for the few seconds they are in the film. Matt and Mike did not agree on this film at all. This might be the first time in the history of the pod that they are so divided. Mike really did not like Ad Astra. He had a difficult time overlooking the many impossible and fantastical parts of the film. He gives it a dismal 1.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt on the other hand really enjoyed it giving a whole lot of passes to the impossible acts in the movie. If you are into sci-fi and space he suggests you definitely go see this film in the theater especially if you can afford an IMAX ticket. He gives Ad Astra 4 out of 5 Reels.
