Episode #323: Tributary – Ghosted

Hump day is here! For this week’s podcast Matt and Mike chat about a streaming movie! Yes it’s been a while but there wasn’t much released in the theaters so we hit up Apple TV+ to check out Ghosted starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. Extra topics today include cameos, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3  is killing it, and friends in high places.

It’s been a very long time since we just stayed at home and streamed a movie for review. Ghosted was a great pick by Mysterious Mike Talent. It is not too serious, action packed, romantic, and even comedic. The film stars Captain America AKA Chris Evans as a super clingy guy trying to track down a girl he spent only one night with. He quickly finds out that maybe he should have quit while he was a head. Ana de Armas stars as the no nonsense CIA operative whose one night stand tracks her down while trying to save the world.

Ghosted was a lot of fun and had some great action. The special effects at times were very lacking. The brief but hilarious cameos by some big stars just added to the fun. Mike awards Ghosted 3 out of 5 Reels while Matt gives it a 3.5 out of 5 Reels.

Next week the summer blockbusters continue to roll with Fast X starring just about every major action star ever! Don’t forget to check out Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #13 at the end of this incredible podcast. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #313: Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre

Welcome one and all. It’s a new podcast day for the Reel Film Nerds. For today’s episode Ma, Mike and Matt chat about Guy Ritchie’s latest film Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre. Bonus discussions include Legion, death, and Yes Man.

This is not your typical Guy Ritchie film. The story is told directly, there are not a ton of characters, and there are no big twists or reveals. Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre is not a bad film just not what your hosts have come to expect from Ritchie. It’s a spy satire with some really funny moments but not enough. It was great seeing Josh Hartnett back on screen and in a somewhat starring role. Aubrey Plaza, Hugh Grant, and of course Jason Statham all do great jobs. Operation Fortune is just missing something keeping it from hitting that incredible film rank like previous Ritchie flicks. Ma and Mike agree Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre is a solid 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt really expected more but he still really enjoyed himself. He awards the film 3 out of 5 Reels.

Mike, Matt, and even Ma just can’t stay away from the theaters in 2023. For next week they will report back about the Sci-Fi dinosaur thriller 65 starring Adam Driver. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #310: Knock at the Cabin

Happy Valentine’s Day hangover, may your wallets be empty and your hearts be full of love. Today for Reel Film Nerds Episode 310 the guys review Knock at the Cabin while celebrating their 5 year anniversary! Topics today include Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode 1, what a twist, and should we review RRR.

Apocalypse stories are a dime a dozen by movie standards. Knock at the Cabin is another apocalypse story but it doesn’t blatantly show you what’s going on outside the cabin. It hints at it and shows you news reports. Knock at the Cabin is a lot more like a one room play focusing on acting and character development and it does great. Besides the incredible acting by the entire cast especially Kristen Cui and Dave Bautista the cinematography is a master class. It is just incredible. Shot entirely on film using tight shots, wide shots, etc. it really elevates this film.

Mike liked Knock at the Cabin but didn’t love it. He awards the film 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt and Ma Hinshaw on the other hand loved it. They both give the film 4 out of 5 Reels.

Next week Mike, Matt, and Ma head to the theaters to watch our first MCU film of 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania starring Paul Rudd and Jonathan Majors. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #206: The Little Things

Happy Wednesday everyone! We are halfway there, well some of us. Today Matt and Mike sit down and chat about a star studded crime thriller hitting theaters and HBO Max, The Little Things. Starring Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto. Bonus topics today include two Brad’s, margarita’s, and Se7en.

If you are nostalgic for the crime dramas of the 90’s like Se7en or The Usual Suspects then boy do we have a movie you will enjoy, the rest of you probably not. Is The Little Things a bad film, no, it is just nothing special. It really should have been better. The performances were amazing but that is to be expected from three Oscar winners. The story is where this movie lacks. It is not bad, just really could use a boost. It drags multiple times and leads you half way down several roads with no end in sight. The Little Things is not worth going to the theater to watch but if you have HBO Max it is well worth it just for the performances. The guys are finally back to normal. Mike gives the film 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt finally beats Mike out giving the new flick a 3 out of 5 Reels.

Next week is Matt’s pick and he chose a horror movie, really? Freaky, written and directed by the guy that brought us Happy Death Day, puts a horror spin on the body swap concept. This is a horror comedy starring Vince Vaughn you don’t want to skip. You can buy or rent it on digital download today. Thank you for supporting our podcast and we will chat at you next week.
